Scrub or Amethstine python Morelia kinghorni (amethistina)


The scrub python is the largest specie of python in Australia and it is found through the north eastern coastal regions of Queensland. It can grow to lengths of 8 meters, although the average size is around 5 - 6 meters. 

This specie can be identified by its slender body, elegant slender head and moderately long tail. It has a cream to golden yellow or bronze background coloration with a series of dark brown to black, irregular, zigzag-shaped bands along the dorsal surface which displays a high degree of iridescence. The flanks are pale yellowish cream with several dark, irregular, longitudinal stripes. The ventral scales are pale to dirty cream in color.

Feeds on rodents, possums, birds, gliders, bats, rabbits, wallabies, feral pig, cats, dogs

The average clutch size is 12 eggs.

The habits of these constrictors is mostly arboreal when juvenile and becoming semi-terrestrial when they mature. Usually nocturnal, however they can be found basking in mid morning or late evening. This is one of the most commonly found pythons of the region and they often hibernate in ceilings throughout the cooler winter months.



Eastern carpet python Morelia spilota mcdowelli



The Eastern carpet python has a wide distribution through eastern Queensland and it can grow up to 2.4m in length.

This moderately stocky python It is highly variable in both color and pattern, with cream to yellowish background coloration and grey to brown dorsal markings, usually edged with black, in a series of irregular bars or splotches which sometimes form into sets of longitudinal stripes.

Feeds on reptiles, rodents, possums, birds, gliders and bats.

It lays clutches of up to 25 eggs.

The habits of this specie are mostly arboreal when juvenile, becoming semi-terrestrial when mature. Usually nocturnal, however they can be found basking in mid morning or late evening. This specie is often found near aviaries and chicken coops.



Jungle carpet python Morelia spilota cheynei



This python is found in the rain forests of the Atherton Tablelands and adjacent areas of north-eastern Queensland. It is one of the smaller members of the Morelia genus, growing to 1.5m in length.

This specie is similar in build and patterns to the Eastern carpet python, although the golden yellow background coloration is highly contrasting with dark brown dorsal markings which are usually edged with black. The patterns may form into series of irregular bars or interconnected splotches which sometimes lead into sets of longitudinal stripes. 

Feeds on reptiles, bird and small mammals.


It lays up to 16 eggs per clutch.


This specie is generally nocturnal and most active after dusk, however it is often found basking.
